Thrush

What is thrush?  An infection in which the fungus Candida albicans accumulates in the mouth. How you do you know if your baby has oral thrush? Oral thrush causes white lesions on the tongue or inner cheeks. Here’s a picture of Judah at 2 months old with oral thrush. First a white patch was on his tongue then it spread to the inside of his cheeks then to his lips.

So the white patch was a giveaway that he had it. Also he had a rash in his diaper which is common when they have thrush. It’s a red rash with lots of red bumps on his bum. So that was a thrush rash. Typically when they have that and oral thrush. Oral thrush is very common in breast fed babies. And hard to get rid of because you can pass it back and forth from the nipples to your baby.

How I think he got thrush. I was clueless about thrush until he got it. Honestly clueless about most things until I wasn’t you know lol! I’m a new mother and constantly learning as he’s growing hehe. So I think it was a lack of hygiene me changing my bras often or using disposable breast pads for my leaking milk. I was leaking a lot in the begging and had to use the pads. At first I used reusable pads where you can wash them.... but I don’t recommend them. It was better to dispose them which I know isn’t the most friendly to the environment.

Then I think it was a combination of not boiling his bottles & pacifiers often. So I boiled everything any tethers, bottles, and pacifiers. Washed all my bras every day. Made sure to shower everyday and if I really had no energy to shower I would wash my boobs with warm water and soap. I never saw thrush on my boobs but I wanted to be on the safe side I didn’t have it. Also supposedly it hurts when breastfeeding I never felt that! But how thrush happens in your boobs is from not mostiorizing your nipples while breastfeeding. Then they crack and milk drys in the cracks causing the fungus to grow. So make sure to use nipple balm! I use coconut oil because it is an antibacterial, edible (so when my baby is eating) and a moisturizer.

So not only did I sanitize everything to get rid of it I used some natural texhniques. I used apple cider vinegar on a cotton swap and dipped it and rubbed around his mouth and tongue. Then did baking soda and water mixed up and put it on a cotton swap and rubbed the sides of his mouth tongue and lips.

Note before I went the natural route, I tried a prescription medicine for him and he threw up and had a bad reaction and gasp for air and then went unconscious. It was very scary. I look back on this moment and wonder was he allergic or did they accidentally give him a higher dosage then a baby should have. So I threw that shit as far out the window as I could. I was not going to mess with that anymore.

So yes I tried medicine first... was not the answer for my child. So back to the natural route I bought these breast wipes Bella b nipple nurture breast wipes.

I bought a pack of three from amazon! I kept one in my bag and the other two at home.    So each time I fed him I wiped my boobs and cleaned them. They have natural food ingredients, safe for the baby to ingest.    I kept applying coconut oil to my boobs and ACV here and there as well. Also I took a probiotic! And it went away after two weeks of the natural route. Before this he had it for over a month 🙈   it does last a while! So hang in there and do what’s best for your bebes! Hope this helped! It helped me!    Much love ✌🏽
